So far, we have looked the importance of the Virgin Birth in our faith. This week, I want us to look at the deity of Christ. According to Webster's dictionary, deity is a god or goddess or divine character. Based on that simple definition, for us to say deity of Christ, we are claiming that Christ is a deity.
I would encourage to look deeply into Paul's letter to the Colossians. I think he clearly explains this doctrine for us there. Colossians 1:15-19 says:
'He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were
created, in heaven & on earth, visible & invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or
authorities - all things were created through him & for him. And he is before all things, & in him
all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the
firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of
God was pleased to dwell.'
Paul clearly says that Jesus was in the beginning; He created all things; & the fullness of God dwelled in Him. He says later in 2:9, 'for in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily.' So he even uses the word deity when describing Jesus. There are a couple of questions that we need to ask ourselves:
1. Why is the deity of Christ important?
2. What would have happened if Christ was not God, & still died for our sins?
The deity of Christ is important because that makes Jesus more than just a good man, which means that He was sinless & could die in our place. If Christ wasn't God, but died in our place nothing would have changed because He would have just been another man dying a physical death.
Praise God that Jesus was God!!!!
Saved by grace,
Bro. Eric
