"If only God would show Himself to me more, it would be easier for me to believe in Him; it would make following Him so much simpler."
I have been in church for most of my life in some capacity or another. I'll absolutely admit that I have said the above phrase on more than one occasion. However, as I've really begun to study the Scriptures for what they truly are, this statement has almost become amusing. All the time, churchgoers toss this phrase around, and some may even mean it...
But let's be honest: Do they really know what they are saying?
God is not some boss that you work for across the country. No, God is GOD. He spoke the universe into existence. He isn't merely an idea that you hope would become more evident in the nature of your environment. God breathed the nature around you into existence. In fact, the breath you just breathed? Yeah, God put that in your lungs as well.
So let's focus on the question at hand: If God were to reveal Himself to you in more "obvious" ways, would you really be more faithful to Him?
According to Scripture, even if God Himself walked with you physically every single day, you still would choose sin over Him, and wouldn't believe a thing He said half the time.
Adam and Eve had a very close relationship with God. They walked with Him physically, and talked to Him directly, yet they chose sin. Even with the supreme, sovereign Creator of the universe walking with them, the serpent enticed them into sin. Was it the serpent's fault? No, the fault lies on Adam and Eve. God revealed Himself to them in so many ways, so many times. Yet sin was the choice still. (Genesis 1-3)
Moses was considered the Friend of God. He was commissioned by God Himself to lead the Israelites out of bondage in Egypt and to the conquer the Promised Land. God spoke to Moses face to face on multiple occasions. However, we find that due to the faithlessness that Moses exhibited while leading the Israelites, he was not permitted to enter the Promised Land. (Exodus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy)
When we are developing a relationship with God through Christ, we must remember that the most essential aspect of the Christian faith is just that: Faith.
'For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "But the righteous man shall live by faith."' Romans 1:16-17
The last part of verse 17 speaks volumes to the regenerated Christian: We are to live by faith. That is what our whole existence as children of God depends on: Faith.
Thanks for reading, and I do hope that this helped someone in some way.
